Air-Cooled Rod Bearings for VW EnginesWhat is a rod bearing? Rod bearings are a split-sleeve type of bearing, which means they have two semicircle halves or shelves that keep the crankshaft and the connecting rod of the engine in place as they rotate. This specific bearing's top half has a pinhole that keeps the crankshaft lubricated so that it is able to spin freely within the bearing without generating excessive heat. Each piston and a part called the connecting rod assembled together in the engine has a rod bearing.
How does this differ from main bearings? Main bearings are not only a part of the crankshaft, but they are relatively close to each other as well, so it can be pretty difficult to tell the difference between the two. The crankshaft spins on the main bearings to keep it in place and allow the engine to rotate in the block. It’s important to have high-quality, OEM-certified precision bearings, otherwise they may not be able to rotate properly and could damage the entire engine.
